The Most Common Website Engagement Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

Visitor engagement is the single most underrated area that website owners overlook. Getting people to stick around and take action is the whole point of the site, and it is more fixable than you think. Here are the mistakes you are probably making right now.

Your copy reads like a machine wrote it

If your writing is stiff and formal, like a professional resume, you are not connecting with anyone. There is no shame in being a little quirky and letting your copy feel warm and human. Speak to your actual audience, not an invisible one. The people reading your site are, in fact, human beings.

You are not rewarding the visitor

When someone lands on your site, they came for a reason. Give every visitor something to take with them, an offer, a clear answer, a genuinely useful piece of content, or an easy way to grab the product or service you provide. People expect a payoff for showing up. Give them one.

You are not clear about what you want

You know what you are selling and what you want the visitor to do. Be boldly clear about both. Lead with a purposeful image or a headline that states plainly what you do and what you want from them. Never be subtle with your message, and never assume the visitor already understands. If your content does not guide them with your intent front and center, they get lost and they bounce.

Developer's advice

Read your homepage headline out loud to someone who knows nothing about your business and ask them what you do. If they hesitate, it is too clever. Clarity beats clever every single time.
