You have accepted that your project, service, or business needs a new website. You are fired up, picturing people using it and everything it will do for you. Then it hits you: you have no idea what you should actually spend to get it built.
Site builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly look great at that exact moment. The pricing seems reasonable, the design showcases look incredible, and it feels like the perfect fit.
I am not here to bash them. But after two decades in web design and development, I can tell you with certainty that we get called in to rescue and rebuild sites off these platforms more often than not. Here is why.
Price and time traps
It still takes real work to make one of these sites look as good as the showcase. You are either going to put in the hours to learn the ropes or spend extra cash to get there. The "easy" part has a bill attached, it just shows up later.
The after effect
You make it through the design phase and your site goes live. But did you do it right? Are the built-in SEO tools enough to help you stand out? It felt easy, and that is exactly the moment to be suspicious. A site that actually outshines your competitors rarely comes from the path of least resistance.
Limitations and growth
Say you are happy with all of it. Then you want to add a real feature, some advanced functionality, or hand maintenance to someone else. This is usually where we come in. Sites built on do-it-yourself builders are boxed into that builder's hosting and its pre-defined functionality. When you outgrow the box, there is no easy way out of it.
So what is the better move?
In most cases, the site-builder story ends three or four months in with a rebuild on a self-hosted, standalone platform to get the freedom you wanted in the first place. My advice: skip the builders, set a real budget, and go through a proper discovery process with a developer or designer you can actually talk to, so the site is built around your vision from day one. It costs less than doing it twice.
Developer's advice
Before you commit to any platform, ask one question: if I outgrow this, can I easily export not just my content but the functionality driving my website and take it elsewhere? On the builders the honest answer is usually no, and knowing that now saves you a painful rebuild later.
